Senior Tax Specialist

Location: San Francisco, CA (Hybrid – 3 days in office: Tuesday–Thursday)

Job Type: Temporary / Contract (6 Months)

Pay Rate: Up to $75 to $78 / hr (commensurate with experience)

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Senior Tax Specialist to join our San Francisco-based team on a 6-month contract basis.

Reporting directly to the Head of Tax, this individual contributor role will lead tax project management, serve as a key partner to cross-functional teams, and ensure tax compliance across the organization. This is an exciting opportunity for a tax professional who excels in a collaborative environment, drives process improvement, and is eager to support the broader finance organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Management & Execution: Assist the Head of Tax in overseeing tax-related projects, managing project status, deliverables, and deadlines to ensure timely execution.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Tax, Controllership, Legal, Finance, and other departments to align priorities, address challenges, and foster transparency with business partners.

  • Policy & Compliance: Develop, document, and maintain tax and accounting policies to ensure alignment with current laws, regulations, and internal standards.

  • Regulatory Monitoring: Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory updates; assist the broader tax team in assessing impact and communicating updates to internal stakeholders.

  • Process Improvement & SOX: Identify and implement process optimization opportunities using modern technology tools. Support Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance, including control documentation and execution.

  • Technical Accounting & Review:

  • Assist in preparing technical tax and accounting memorandums.

  • Review U.S. international tax compliance forms prepared by external accounting firms (including Forms 5471, 8858, 1118, and 8900 series).

  • Assist with Subpart F, GILTI, FDII, BEAT, and Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) analyses.

  • External Advisory Management: Work alongside external advisors, auditors, and internal teams to address complex tax and accounting matters.

Requirements & Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation.

  • Licensure: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.

  • Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience in corporate tax and public accounting.

  • Tax Knowledge: Strong hands-on experience with U.S. federal, state, and international tax compliance and reporting requirements.

  • Accounting Standards: Familiarity with FASB standards to support technical accounting memo development and policy creation.

Technical & System Skills

Proficiency or exposure to as many of the following tools as possible:

  • ERP & Financial Reporting: SAP, Oracle HFM, Oracle HTP

  • Tax Software: OneSource Income Tax

  • Analytics & Automation: Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Alteryx, and Robotic Process Automation (RPA)

  • Office Tools: Advanced / Excel Power User

Soft Skills & Preferred Experience

  • Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate complex tax concepts clearly to non-tax stakeholders.

  • Mindset: Proactive, self-directed, and quick to adapt to dynamic business environments.

  • SOX: Working knowledge of SOX compliance and internal control frameworks.

  • Industry Focus: Experience in retail or wholesale industries is preferred.

  • Advanced Degree: Master’s degree in Taxation (MST) preferred.

Work Schedule & Location

  • Hybrid Model: Based in San Francisco, CA headquarters. Expectation is 3 days per week on-site (typically Tuesday through Thursday, subject to business needs).
